MaineStats aims to present public data accurately and transparently. When something is wrong, we want to fix it — and to be open about it when we do.
The principle
Every number on this site traces back to a public dataset, listed on the data sources page. We normalize and visualize those figures; we don’t produce our own estimates. So if a chart here ever disagrees with its original source, the original source is right, and we’ll correct the chart to match.
Data isn’t live — each source refreshes on its own schedule, which you can check on the refresh status page. A figure lagging its source because of that schedule isn’t an error, but a figure that’s wrong, mislabeled, or misattributed is — and we treat those seriously.
What we correct
- A value that doesn’t match the original source.
- A parsing or unit error (e.g. a weekly figure shown as annual).
- A mislabeled source, date range, or geography.
- A chart that omits an important caveat the source attaches.
How we handle a correction
We fix confirmed errors as soon as we can verify them against the source. Material corrections — ones that change a number a reader might have relied on — are logged below with the date and what changed. Minor fixes (typos, formatting) are made without a log entry.
